Observational Research

To begin this project, I went to interview and observe Hayes, the owner of a local custom furniture workshop in Cincinnati called the Brush Factory. We spoke on the tools he used, their shortcomings, and I got to watch him go about his work in his shop.

Opportunity Area

“Sanders are great, but you spend so much time with them you kind of have to love it or you’re hating your life.”

This was what Hayes told me when asked about his most used power tool - the hand sander. This got me excited, so I decided that I wanted to further explore the design opportunities that came with re-designing a hand sander.

Ideation

Ideation began with simple side views to identify silhouettes that seemed desirable yet functional. After that, I did some more sketch exploration on possible 3D form and function before landing on a direction that I took into CAD.

Functional Flexibility

With a rotating secondary handle allowing the user to hold it in three different orientations, built in dust collection with the ability to hook into a Shop-Vac system, and options for either corded or cordless usage, the ROS_001 sander provides a flexible, adaptive experience to the user.
